This is the worst cartoon I have ever drawn…. ever. Ever!

Funny thing is, it actually took alot of effort to get it to look that bad. Thank goodness.

Meri and I went to see Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. Raff was supposed to go with me tonight to Point Orlando, so I could grab some presents and rock a li’l Q*Bert, but he pussed out when his girl cockwrangled him into spending time with her and her new cat. I promised that I’d wait until Sunday, but fuck, man… I really like the books and have been waiting for this movie to come out for a while.
It was very watchable but be forewarned: If you’ve ever read the books, the whole thing will make you go “Whafuck?” The books have an underlying backstory that I dare not go into here, because it would take me a day to do so. So take my summarization with a grain of salt. However, as a movie it holds up pretty damn well. I had never been exposed to the resume of Brad Silberling, and my only exposure to screenwriter Robert Gordon was through his masterfully craptastic work on Men in Black 2, so I was prepared for the worst. Maybe Gordon’s scripts are only as good as the director thinks they can be. The sets were pretty damn close to how I’d imagined them, Carrey was great as Olaf, and the movie wasn’t corroded with that bullshit jump-cut editing shit that we’ve been seeing in too many movies as of late. Oh, and stay for the credits. The After-Effects montage is just mesmerizing.
I had a certain fear that they’d tone down the movie a bit, because the book version of Olaf’s character is an absolute dick and they were selling this movie to the young’ins. Thankfully, they left much of him in there, including the infamous “slapping” scene from The Bad Beginning. However, there were some minor issues I had: For one, there’s a nonsensical commercial reference in it that just seems so out of place and has no doubt already dated the movie. Secondly, Carrey did the character of Olaf right – he was insane and a flamboyantly egotistical asshole – but some scenes seemed to be Carrey just being typical Carrey. That kind of undermined the weight of the character’s vile nature and struck me as hastily shoved in there to pad out the runtime. And thirdly: Like I said, if you’ve ever read the books, the ending will make you go, “Sure, okay.”
As the movie was excellent as a whole, I had better finish the Snicket series before anymore sequels are made as I will undeniably be pulling out my wallet for them. The series itself is like a giant question and I don’t want the mystery solved for me. Tomorrow I’ll grab two more books, so I’m not left outside of the party with my dick hanging out of my pants in the rain.
I think I’ll give myself an award for that metaphor. Dayumn.
